a sage & sire story

When the World Feels Too Big

A gentle story about big feelings, racing hearts, and the small ways we can find our footing again when the world feels too loud.

The morning had started like any other. Sire ate his breakfast of clover and warm oats, watered the little herbs in his garden, and waved to the birds.

But then the wind changed.

Dark clouds rolled over the meadow faster than Sire had ever seen. The branches swayed. The air smelled like rain and something else — something sharp and electric that made his chest feel tight.

“Sage,” Sire whispered, his voice smaller than he wanted it to be. “The world feels too big.”

Sage had been drying herbs on the porch. She set down her bundle, walked over, and sat beside Sire without saying a word.

For a little while, they just watched the clouds together. Sire's breathing was fast and shallow. Sage's breathing was slow, like the tide.

“My heart is going thump-thump-thump,” Sire said.

“That is your heart trying to keep you safe,” Sage said gently. "It is doing its job. But you are allowed to help it slow down."

Sire looked at her. "How?"

"We look for the things that are still steady."

Sage placed one hoof on the grass. Sire did the same.

"Tell me one thing you can see," Sage said.

"The old oak tree," Sire answered.

"One thing you can hear."

"The wind in the leaves."

"One thing you can feel."

"My hooves on the ground. And your shoulder next to mine."

Sage smiled. "The storm is still coming. But you are here. You are steady. You are safe enough."

Sire took a slow breath. Then another. The world still felt big — but it no longer felt like it was swallowing him.
